Gibbon Nation,
We are writing to make you aware of a recent cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool, a software vendor that provides our Student Information System (SIS).
On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, we learned via email that PowerSchool, a student information system provider used by our school district and many others across the country, was the target of a cybersecurity attack by an unauthorized user.
On January 9, 2025, schools across the nation participated in a zoom meeting with the leadership and the attorney representing PowerSchool to learn more about how the attack occurred and the steps PowerSchool is taking to contain the situation. Gibbon Public Schools participated in this meeting.
The cybersecurity attack was discovered on Saturday, December 28, 2024. We have been informed that some student and teacher data from our district, along with school districts across the nation, was downloaded by this unauthorized user. PowerSchool is conducting an analysis to determine what data and the type of information the attacker was able to access. We are also conducting our own investigation to determine the impact of this attack and we are waiting to receive more detailed information from PowerSchool.
According to PowerSchool, they have taken all appropriate steps to prevent the data involved from further unauthorized access or misuse and the situation is contained. PowerSchool does not anticipate the data being shared with the public and they believe it has been deleted without any further dissemination or replication.
We will notify you as soon we receive important updates from PowerSchool.
Sincerely,
Vern Fisher, Superintendent
